The man who had combined two child sized skis and gave it to his daughter was Sherman Poppen. He had thought of this idea because his daughter was a huge surfer, and did not like to ski. The first snowboard was approximately 1.2 meters long. The next year, Mr. Sherman built a factory and started mass producing the boards. Snurfer was the companies name. In the first 10 years, this company made 10-million dollars. In 1977, a 22 year old Jake Burton started his own small snowboarding shop in Vermont. His snowboards were priced $38 per board. This was expensive at the time, but many people where still encouraged to buy the boards. Most people had realized that this sport is fun and his boards where made with the best qualities. In the mid 1980's, the snowboarding races had begun; one racer was timed at going down the hill at 60-miles per hour. Between the years of 1987 and the early 1990's, the half pipe was invented, and people had started to do tricks, not only on snowboards but on skis. Everyday the snowboard is being improved and adding more fun to this wonderful sport.
